Domestic Extension1st July 2015
To significantly enhance the ground floor living space of a detached 4-bedroom house with a single story flat roof brick build extension. Located at the rear of the property, the additional space was designed to significantly increase the size of the family lounge and create a contemporary dining area.
Mr Witham, the homeowner, was clear that his main objective was to facilitate greater use of the downstairs living space. The original floor plan included a small dining room to the front of the property which was disjointed from the main living area and therefore rarely used and basically wasted space. The addition of a single story rear extension meant the living room footprint could be doubled and a modern dining area created within the heart of the home. Having evolved this workable new open plan area, ensuring it was flooded with natural light was also a priority for the homeowner. In addition to maintaining a light bright space the aim was also to create an architectural feature within the project without impacting on neighboring properties.
Mr Witham says: ‘Rather than installing smaller individual units we liked the idea of having one long unit, which would give us maximum daylight and hopefully great sky views. Many of the systems we originally looked at had rather thick and cumbersome looking rafters which drew your eye and spoilt the view.’
Mr Witham, with the expert advice of his architect, undertook research into various options and decided upon a roof lantern system.
‘On reviewing all of the product literature and watching various product videos, it was clear that one system stood out from the rest, NDC’s Skylantern glazed roof system’, adds Mr Witham.
Skylantern’s design, constructed from super strong and light 40mm aluminium box rafters, with slim and elegant roof profiles ticked all of the boxes: from inside the property the Skylantern forms a striking feature and from outside, with its low and unobtrusive skyline, the Skylantern’s glazed roof structure doesn’t over dominate.
With such a big, south facing, glazed area the homeowner was naturally concerned about ambient room temperature changes, especially on hot sunny days. This was easily addressed by NDC who recommended the installation of Solar Control Neutral coated glass in order to greatly reduce the heating effect from the sun without blocking out the natural light.
The new extension has completely transformed the flow and utilisation of the ground floor space. A stunning and contemporary new living and dining area has been created which has been significantly enriched with a magnificent Skylantern roof lantern from NDC.
Mr Witham concludes: “Deciding to buy a roof lantern was a pretty big decision and I am truly grateful to NDC’s sales team for guiding me through the process. We now have a fully utilised living space and the addition of a skylight that really gives our home the wow factor we were looking for, both inside and out!”
